A-P, first of all I'd like to make it clear that I know it's wrong for me to even use a word like "faggot" in any context, but--wrong it may be--that's what I think sometimes. Second, I know you are more than that, and I know you are a wonderful person with a good heart. Unfortunately, that is not always apparent on the board.

Now to address your post:

I certainly don't see alcohol, esp. moderate use of it, nowhere NEAR as dangerous as smoking pot or using other drugs. (And I HOPE I don't have to remind you about the easy shift to stronger drugs after weed?)

That's like saying cheesecake is nowhere near as fattening as a stick of butter. IT'S ALL CRAP!

Let's be honest, too. Are weed and other drugs ever too far from a bottle of alcohol? Who's to really say where the shift begins?

First of all, the first one is LEGAL (at least here). I could never be caught smoking weed, ie. using drugs, as a teacher. Now, the fact why weed is illegal, you can all think about that. I certainly won't start any anti-weed campaign here and explain the reasons, since I really feel enlightened people should understand already.

Oh yes. That law always has our best interests in mind. That must be why carcinogenics like cigarettes are right behind any market counter. Of course, that can't have anything to do with the fact that the tobacco industry has poured money into the Americas since the 17th century. Frankly, you cannot overlook the economic factors that influence which drugs are legal and which drugs are not.

Regarding that economic influence, in the 1920s the US went through a period known as Prohibition, during which alcohol WAS in fact CONSTITUTIONALLY illegal. It was largely supported by women's suffragists who saw how alcohol conflicted the all-important family structure. Of course, the Constitution was amended again to allow for alcohol because lawmakers obviously discovered how difficult it was to patrol an industry that has existed since the time of the pharoahs. Despite alcohol's negative effects, it--like tobacco--was just too much a part of the economy and society by then.

I don't really want to use this fact as an argument, but, just so you know, marijuana is actually legal in California--with a prescription (maybe because it's really too much a part of our society and economy :teehee ). I guess that's like how wine is supposedly good for the heart.

Second of all, I am offended that some people seem to think alcohol is a drug since it ISN'T by definition. I don't know if the word "drug" means something different to you than it does to me in Finnish, but there is no way one could call alcohol a drug.

It's something you consume that affects your bodily functions, yet it is not a food. Thus, it's a drug. And are you TRULY offended?

Somebody told me you had a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend...
