There was certain confidence behind Whitney's soft-spokeness.

Yeah, there's definitely a steeliness underneath the surface, just ready to pop. To be honest, I found that Whitney a little boring. Nowadays, I love how she doesn't hold back. It makes for interesting interviews because she is witty as hell and she has such a mercurial nature--you never know what she's gonna say. Back then, I think, she was trying too hard to be polished. Not necessarily her fault though--I mean, I don't think white America would have been ready to accept a black singer like her in the way they did if she had her sass on full display. So she did what she had to do. That's what's kind of annoying about people accusing her of being "too white" then--it was a product of the pressures on a black artist at the time trying to have real crossover success.

I live in Park Slope in Brooklyn. I love it over here, but I can't wait till this lease is up so that I can move into Manhattan. I just got a hook up for a place on 5th and Bowrey I think, for like, 500 a month. Rent stabalized!!

Hmmmm...want to get married? :lol When is your lease up? It took me forever to venture off the island, until finally I went to a party in Williamsburg a few years ago. Used to date someone in Greenpoint, too. Now I love Brooklyn!

I believe she was like 23 or 24...she was so gorgeous.

What's interesting to me about this one is how skinny she is. But yes, she's gorgeous then and now. :love

Whitney masterpiece I'm feeling at the moment: God Bless America, live in NYC in 1999. In this patriotic sequel to her legendary SSB performance, Whitney does what she does best: Combines earth-shattering power, clarity, and range, with a torn-from-the-gut gospelicious flair.
