You so crazy Franz! >:

David Lasley wrote DOTSE, and he sang it on a 2001 album. Apparently he has a four-octave range. :chat

Well, I certainly would be remiss if I didn't include Whitney's debut television appearance on the Merv Griffin Show! This is a DVD quality video file. It was 1983, two years before her debut. This is a really magical performance, as her natural talent as a lyrical phraser is on full display. She just emanates pure joy. Makes me happy to watch. This performance was sent all around the country via videotape to potential songwriters. He pimped the hell out of it to get her the best songs--and with good reason. Watching this, you know she was destined to become the greatest live performer to ever live. A little trivia note--towards the end of the song(which is from the Wiz, called Home) you can see Cissy furiously conducting the band behind the curtain. This is because they were out of step with Whitney, and she wasn't going to let them mess up her baby's debut. :p

Few people know that on the same show, Whitney and Cissy performed a medley of songs together, including Ain't No Way. A little bit more trivia--on the original Aretha Franklin recording of Ain't No Way, Cissy is the one hitting all of those super-high notes that really make the song extra-special. She duplicates them here in this mp3 audio file of the mom-n-daughter medley:

Whitney masterpiece I'm feeling at the moment: God Bless America, live in NYC in 1999. In this patriotic sequel to her legendary SSB performance, Whitney does what she does best: Combines earth-shattering power, clarity, and range, with a torn-from-the-gut gospelicious flair.
