No problem! I will get to the 'Whitney' album soon. This thread at Divadom and the The 'Whitney Houston' Era: Rare Articles, 1985-1987 thread at Classic Whitney are meant to be complementary to one another as part of an ongoing project to get a full perspective on Whitney's career through total immersion in the various eras. So, the next step in that project is a Rare Articles thread for the 'Whitney' era, which I'll start up when Manish gets back from holiday and/or when this crazy first semester in grad school finally ends. :p

In the meantime, don't think I'm all out of files yet! Remember when I said I didn't have a video file of Whitney singing All At Once? Well, guess what? Here's the famous video clip of her singing AAO at the 1987 American Music Awards. She's introduced, and followed, by Diana Ross. This is a pretty rad performance. She starts a little shaky(word is she had just recovered from nodules), but damn, after a minute she turns it out!! Also, the first appearance of the white diva microphone. :lol She doesn't often perform AAO in its entirety, so this is a gem if you're a fan of the song.

I find it interesting that she's introduced by Diana Ross, as when Whitney first came out, she was seen to be a threat to Diana by the press. Interestingly enough, when Mariah came out, she was seen as a threat to Whitney's crown. It's all so cyclical.

Regarding AAO, I have to say it works best in the context of a medley. I like the way she incorporated it with Didn't We Almost Have It All and Where Do Broken Hearts Go, as together they just hit a really powerful emotional punch. We'll see some of those medleys in the next thread.

Whitney masterpiece I'm feeling at the moment: God Bless America, live in NYC in 1999. In this patriotic sequel to her legendary SSB performance, Whitney does what she does best: Combines earth-shattering power, clarity, and range, with a torn-from-the-gut gospelicious flair.
