Well, you look at Tori Amos. I don't know if you're familiar with her stuff or not, but I'll assume you're not. I'm using her as an example, because I'm so familiar with her music. Her fans really clung to her music in the earlier days for emotional support, because they really felt that it spoke to them. These fans (many of which are Liz Phair fans, by the way) look to her for that same comfort, for the same refuge from the same old shit on the radio, for something innovative, different, not...pop. Not N sync, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, etc etc etc. Most of those people really don't like that stuff at all. So to finish the Tori example, ever since Strange Little Girls, she's really taken a departure from her earlier alternative style and it seems as though she's taken residence with the PLJ adult contemporary/elevator music style. And it pisses them off. Why? Because they love who she was so much. And so, on many many Tori forums, you always hear them bitching and moaning about what her new record is going to sound like..."oh God, it's going to be another Scarlet's Walk. Someone go get the knife and let me kill myself now."

So they get pissed when someone like Liz Phair turns to Avril Lavigne's production team for help. Avril Lavigne. They most likely take it as an insult that someone that is so great to them is turning to TRL music producers and...selling out. A lot of her fans really take offense to things like sell outs. It's just a different stance to take when you're *really* not into pop music. And the people who get insulted at these changes are normally *really* not into pop music. If you're referring to other artists that aren't more or less alternative and non-mainstream, I can't even begin to anwser your question.

Personally, I just don't like the album. I think it was a serious step down from Exile in Guyville. Flower was freaking brilliant to me. A few clever lyrics and catchy hooks aren't enough to save that record for me.

It's not about what the fans want, it's about the artist

Ahhh, you should hear how many times a day that's said on various Tori forums, with the obligatory follow up comment of, "Tori is not your bitch."

LOL!
