I should have qualified my statement, too. For one, I respect that she has tried to get as much out of her voice as she can (this gets to the discussion about Madonna, Mariah, and Janet exploring the textures of their voices). I also think her voice can be inviting; "I Want You" and "Frozen" are songs where her vocal is immediate to me. Still, a lot of times her vocal is distracting and prevents me from being pulled into the track. The timbre in her voice isn't always pleasing to my ear, and she isn't always on key. I know she likes to go with first takes, but I think artists can be vocally raw and still be on point in a technical sense.
