I don't think I had a full appreciation of Janet's vocal arrangements until I heard the SPEAKERPHONE interlude from THE VELVET ROPE album, where a clip of the vocals from I GET LONELY are played a capella.
That made me moist, as do Janet's harmonized background vocals on the underrated FUNKY BIG BAND.

The BROTHERS IN RHYTHM SWING YO PANTS mix of IF also has a small section that features the background vocals a capella. I just love those. And the subtle differences in harmonies between verses one and two is inexplicable, yet sublime. I'd love to sit down with Janet and Terry and Jimmy and ask them what they were thinking with some of their arrangements. On the first verse of IF ('how many nights I've laid'), the background vocals stay on the same note and go wah-wah, and then go up singing oohs, but on the second verse ('your smooth and shiny'), they voices shift up and then harmonize with the lead vocals. WHY THE HELL IS IT DIFFERENT, JANET!?!?!!11111

God, I love that woman. :love
