Quote:Enjoy the guest judges now, "American Idol" fans, because this is all you're gonna get.Visiting celebrities yes, even Barry Manilow will no longer weigh in during the contest's final stage, according to "Idol" co-creator/Click here to find out more!executive producer Nigel Lythgoe."That's why we did those in the audition period," Lythgoe said of the inclusion of Gene Simmons, Brandy and the others in the open auditions, one of a few changes already evident or announced for the fourth season (see "Battle Of The Sexes Among Changes Planned For 'American Idol' ") ."It's a littler unfair, I believe, to bring a guest judge in that has not lived with these kids and [seen in person] how they progressed," Lythgoe explained. "America will have watched them progress this season far more than any other season. With the change of rules, our three main judges will know how they've progressed, and so all you'd find with a guest judge would be, 'Oh, you've done a good job.' 'Yes, you're great.' No one wants to be tough or helpful in that sense because they won't have the background history. So we're trying to shy away from that."In the past, few guest judges have criticized the contestants, making them sort of irrelevant anyway (although it was Gladys Knight who dubbed Ruben "the Velvet Teddy Bear") .Lythgoe did say, however, that he would include guests in special circumstances. "If somebody like Paul McCartney said, 'Oh, I'd love to come on the show this week,' then we'd say, 'Yes, please, Paul,' " he explained. ("Idol" producers have approached McCartney each year about doing a Beatles theme week, but "haven't made that work," Lythgoe said. In fact, Beatles music has yet to be cleared for use by contestants.)"Idol" producers hope the addition of guest judges to the open auditions will make up for their absence later on in the show, even though they've made the first round slightly more complicated. Since the judges ultimately decide who moves on to the second round (otherwise known as "Hollywood") , there can't be ties."We don't explain it, to be quite frank, and that's a failure on our part, but what happens is Simon carries the record company's vote," Lythgoe said. "So Simon Cowell holds the swaying vote."Lythgoe also revealed one more change with the fourth season. Instead of the finalists sharing a house together in Los Angeles, they will now live separately in apartments."The only reason we did a house the first season was to keep the kids together and keep our eyes on them," Lythgoe said. "It wasn't trying to emulate any other show. The minute you say, 'And they're all going to live in a house together,' you go, 'Isn't that "Big Brother"? Haven't I seen that?' And so I want to veer away from everyone who's trying to copy us, because so many people attempt to jump on a bandwagon when they don't even know what tune the band is playing, and I don't want this program to be one of those. We lead, we don't follow."Past seasons of "Idol" rarely showed the singers in the house anyway."This is about the contestants, how they get on, and how America feels about them, not about them living together," Lythgoe said. "Let's mind our own business, as far as that's concerned."Whether the tweaks to the show have anything to do with it or not, "Idol" is off to a fast start, beginning with 33.6 million viewers on last Tuesday's premiere."We've been off screen for seven to eight months now ... so [viewers] had enough time away to sort of want to come back and watch it again," Lythgoe said. "There was some bad weather on the East Coast that I'm being told helped a great deal, but for me, there has not been a great deal to watch on television, and I think everyone has been looking forward to the return."
